The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing implies that the team could be crafting a real-time experience instead of another tactical title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—traits that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, letting players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
