Trump Suggests Relocation of World Cup Fixtures from Massachusetts, 2028 Olympics from LA

Ex-president Trump has yet again announced he would pressure FIFA to remove global soccer tournament matches from a host city based on municipal governance, with the Boston region now being the latest targeted location to encounter such threats from the White House. Furthermore, Trump suggested he would contemplate comparable measures against LA for the upcoming Olympic Games due to potential security concerns.

Official Power and Informal Leverage

While Trump does not have official jurisdiction to unilaterally remove either tournament, he is able to apply pressure the respective governing bodies overseeing each tournament to change venues.

Context of Remarks

The statements were made during a media briefing with Argentina's leader Milei, who was at the executive mansion following the disclosure of a $20 billion financial assistance for the Latin American country. At the conclusion of the gathering, a media member inquired Trump about a latest “street takeover” in the city where law enforcement were assaulted and a police vehicle was ignited. The correspondent also wondered if the situation could result in the removal of hosting duties for the larger soccer tournament.

“We could take them away,” Trump remarked about the World Cup fixtures, set to be staged at the Massachusetts arena. “She is ineffective … she’s radical left, and activists are dominating areas of the city. That is a major assertion, right?”

Urban Disturbances and Ideological Perceptions

Unauthorized gatherings, a digitally organized trend where participants assemble on public avenues after dark to perform stunts, have emerged as a ongoing nuisance in metropolitan centers since the Covid-19 pandemic closures. Current similar events have turned violent in the state, including downtown. Nevertheless, these occurrences are generally not regarded as associated with any particular political ideology.

“If someone is failing, and I feel there’s security risks, I will call the organization's president, who is phenomenal, and tell him let’s move it to an alternate venue,” Trump said on Tuesday. “And he would do that. He may not enjoy to do it, but he’d do it. Very easily, he would.”

FIFA Relationship

FIFA President has made no secret his efforts to be publicly aligned with the former president ahead of the upcoming World Cup, planned to be hosted in numerous American venues across the US along with several in Canada and multiple in the southern neighbor. The FIFA president has been present at multiple Oval Office events, facilitated Trump hand over the FIFA club trophy after the championship match, and has even rescheduled his FIFA's internal meeting to join Trump on a journey to the Gulf states this year.

Previous Threats

Despite this, Trump from suggesting the removal of World Cup matches from different locations. Recently, the Washington city and the Bay Area metropolis came under similar criticism, with Trump asserting both urban centers were “governed by ideological activists who lack understanding what they’re doing,” while criticizing the security conditions of both cities and suggesting that games could be relocated.

Official Rebuttal

Victor Montagliani dismissed Trump’s assertions when he responded days later at a event in London.

“It’s FIFA’s tournament, our responsibility, we decide these matters,” he stated. “Respectfully to national heads, the sport is transcends political figures and football will endure their regime and their leadership. It's the beauty of football, that it is transcends any individual and more important than any country.”

Olympics Threat

On Tuesday, Trump’s reply to a inquiry about Boston veered into a similar threat regarding the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

“If I perceived Los Angeles was not sufficiently organized, I will relocate it to a different city as needed,” he said. “On that one I may have to get a varying permission, but we would do that.”

The permission Trump refers to would need to come from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Their leader, Kirsty Coventry, was chosen to her position in spring and has so far not meet publicly with the former president, though she indicated that she hopes for a meeting with him at eventually.

Other Remarks

He also criticized California governor Newsom’s management of this year’s California fires, stating that a similar situation could lead to the relocation of the Games.

“If he doesn’t play ball, we will have to be very tough,” he said.

The warning was similarly direct for the Massachusetts city.

“Boston must clean up their act,” he said. “That is I will say.”
